In a world of so many virtual things, I easily find myself drawn to objects that feel very real. Objects that were once part of the earth, not part of a factory or an assembly line in China. So when, I found this doll online, I just jumped at the chance to get it.

Who wouldn’t?

It’s made by hand with natural fibers and scraps from multiple designers’ and it’s adorable. But here is the problem. I have been hiding it from my daughter for weeks. As soon as it was delivered, I shoved it back into the envelope and put it in my office — the only place in my house that’s off limits to the kids. We sometimes have nice things, but I don’t want her to have this nice thing. Besides, she has at least 47 dolls and 26 Barbies. Does she really need another doll?

I tried for two weeks to think of a reason not to give the doll to her. Obviously, it presents no health hazards. It’s way too big to swallow. It doesn’t take batteries, and it has no instructions, so other than handing it over, I don’t need to be involved with this toy. But the more I thought about it, the less I wanted to give it to her. I started obsessing.

Maybe I would start a collection of these dolls. Every single one is unique, so who knows. It could be a good investment. And did I mention that they are beautiful? At almost two feet tall, they would need large glass cases that would fill up our living room. Or maybe I would need to start my own doll museum. I mean, look at those lovely cherry-red, heart-shaped lips and those cute, cute stockings.

And then I realized that this was getting totally creepy. Because adults who play with dolls are sort of creepy, aren’t they?

So here was my solution. I gave it to my daughter and told her that she could hug it and give it back. She did. And then I told her that we were going to put it somewhere safe until we could play with her again after she graduated from high school.

 What do you think?

Inspired by the classic French rag doll, Vic and Vie invite you to rediscover the beauty that was. Our unique dolls are made with natural fabrics, vintage trims, wool, and lots of love!

Influenced by fashion and beautiful textiles, I create timeless elegance with a hint of vintage glamour. Using other designers’ scraps leftover from the current season, my collection is fluid, always developing, and most items are one of a kind. Each piece has been hand-made on Salt Spring Island, BC, all designed from my imagination with great attention to detail. I hope you enjoy my creations as much as I have enjoyed making them.

With their captivating charm, Vic and Vie dolls are more than a toy. For ages young and old, they remind us to Imagine. Dream. Play.
